Congratulations to the American men for winning two (of five) team championships, two (of six) individual singles titles, and winning or sharing in four doubles titles. The Britannia Cup Team (65s) of Fred Drilling, Dick Johnson, Jimmy Parker & Ken Robinson won its crown as did the Bitsy Grant Team (75s) of Dick Doss, Neil Hurlbut, John Powless & King Van Nostrand.
Individual titles were won in singles by Fred Farzanegan in the 70s and King Van Nostrand in the 75s. In doubles the 70s team of Bob Duesler & George Sarantos and the 80s teams of Tony Franco & Graydon Nichols won their events while Brian Cheney (60s) and Fred Drilling (65s) shared in their titles while playing with partners from Great Britain and Australia respectively.
The thrilling semi-final 75 doubles match that concluded play on Friday, Nov. 13 was won by Duesler & Sarantos over Peter Froelich & King Van Nostrand 2-6,6-3,7-6(5) with the victors winning the last four points before an enthusiastic crowd.
Fred Robinson won the 55 singles title and concluded with wins over Lawrence Belinsky 6-4,6-3 and then over injured Geoff Cykman 1-6,7-6(1),ret(inj). Cykman had dominated Eric Finkle 6-1,6-0. Leonard Wofford & Paul Wulf won the doubles in a strong performance finishing with victories over Mike Talmadge & Frank Zebot 6-2,6-3 and then over Robinson & Tom Smith 6-4,6-4. Robinson & Smith had defeated David Bohannon & Kevin Kearney 6-1,6-3.

The Southern team dominated the sparsely attended 2009 Intersectionals with convincing wins in the 55s, 65s and 75s. The 55 team (Fred Robinson, Tom Smith, R. Scott, John Callen, Marty Pearson, and Steve Duffel defeated Midwest, Middle States and Texas without the loss of a match. In the 65s, the team of Emile Rasheed, Jerry Kirk Bob Adams, and Bailey Brown dominated the Midwest and Texas teams and emerged with a narrow 3-2 victory over Florida to take the crown. Finally, in the two-team 75s competition Southern (Gordon Hammes, Richard Lawson, Robert Koenig and Joe Roberts) overwhelmed Texas in a match that, due to the paltry entry, was repeated a second time — with the same result.
Rain delayed the singles and doubles finals but bothered Larry Turville nary a bit as Turville, top seeded in both events, utterly dominated the field. Padg Bolton bested Alejandro Riefkohl 6-3,6-3 to reach the final while Larry Buried Mike Dahm 6-0,6-1 and then disposed of Bolton 6-1,6-0. Neal Newman & Turville cruised through the doubles ending with convincing wins over Dahm & Jerry McEwen 6-2,6-2 and then over Dan & David Bohannon 6-4,6-2. The Bohannons has edged out Jerry Kirk & Hugh Thomson 6-1,2-6,6-3.
Mike Myers, one of eight #9 seeds, emerged to garner the singles title without the loss of a set. Myers controlled top seed Roger Guedes 6-3,6-2 and then #3 Fred Robinson 6-4,6-4 in the final. Robinson had ousted #2 Larry Turville 6-3,6-3. Top seeds Tom Smith & Turville prevailed in the doubles as the four top seeds reached the semi-finals. Smith & Turville defeated John Callen & Marvin Pearson 6-4,6-2 in the semis and then bested Zan Guerry & Fred Robinson 7-5,6-2. Guerry & Robinson had defeated John Donelan & Mark Massey 6-2,6-3.
Fred Farzanegan defeated Lester Sack 2-6,6-4,6-0 to win the 70 singles title. Sack had bested Bob Duesler 6-3,6-4 while Farzanegan was having a short day 2-1,ret(ill) when Bob Quall passed out while chasing down a drop shot. Fortunately Quall's overnight hospital stay revealed no systemic problems. Tom Brunkow & Sam Corso won their second doubles title in 2009 with concluding wins over Duesler & George Gill 7-5,6-1 and then over Farzanegan & Quall w/o(ill). Farzanegan & Quall had defeated surprise semi-finalists Roy Anderson & Bob Dilworth 6-4,6-0 as Anderson & Dilworth had surprised top seeds Henry Leichtfried & George Sarantos 1-6,6-4,6-4 in the round of 16. .
Newt Meade came up big with two more gold balls. Newt won four matches while losing a total of only fourteen games. He took out perennial winner Bob Sherman 6-3,6-0 in the semis and then Marvin Henderson 6-3,6-3 in the final. Henderson had edged out Yutuaka Kobayashi 6-1,4-6,6-4. John Benn & Meade, unseeded, cruised through the doubles ending up with wins over Kobayashi & Larry McDonnell 6-3,6-1 and then Henderson & Sherman 6-2,6-0. Henderson & Sherman has topped Ted Heisler & W.T. Mathes 6-1,6-4.
Alex Swetka continued his dominance in the 90s finishing up by ousting Vero Ajello 6-2,ret(inj) and then James Chavasse 6-1,6-1. Chavasse had upset his doubles partner Wade MacDonald 6-4,6-4. Chavasse & MacDonald won the three-team doubles round robin with a pair of 6-4,6-2 wins over Ajello & Tudor Apmadoc and Nels Glesne & Jim Talman.

Brian Cheney cruised to the 60 doubles title without the loss of a set. Cheney bested Doug Barrow 7-6(7),6-1 and then Marc Mazo 6-2,6-4. Mazo had defeated Mike Dickens 6-1,6-3. Cheney & Neal Newman won the doubles without losing a set. They defeated Winder Bill & Bill Gordon 6-3,6-3 in the semis and Jared Florian & Mazo 6-2,7-6(4) in the final. Florian & Mazo had bested Mike Dahm & Jerry McEwen 6-1,6-1.
John Powless and Tony Franco stregthened their claim to top rankings as each one won his respective singles and doubles title. Powless cruised through the singles draw with the loss of only one set (to Roger Kling in the quarters) and finished with wins over Chuck DeVoe 6-0,6-3 and George McCabe 6-2,6-3. McCabe had defeated Joe Russell 7-5,6-4. Dick Doss & Powless won another doubles gold ball finishing up with convincing wins over Jack Bradshaw & Dick Crawford 6-1,6-1 and then McCabe & Chuck Nelson 6-2,6-3. McCabe & Nelson had bested DeVoe & Russell 6-1,6-2.
Tony Franco lost nary a single set in the tournament. Franco bested doubles partner Graydon Nichols 6-3,6-4 in the semis and dominated top seed Clem Hopp 6-1,6-2 in the final. Hopp had exacted a measure of revenge over Dick Emmert 6-2,6-1. Franco & Nichols won their two doubles matches easily defeating Russell Fink & Eyup Tanman 6-1,6-3 and then Jan Lindstedt & Bob Meyerdierks 6-0,6-3. Top seed Jimmy Parker won both titles in a rain-delayed tournament. Parker was not tested and finished with wins over Mike Stewart 6-3,6-1 and Bill Bethard 6-4,6-2. George Sarantos came up big by winning both the singles and doubles titles. Sarantos, seeded sixth, edged #2 Fred Farzanegan 1-6,6-4,7-6(3) in the semis and then topped #4 Herman Ahlers 7-6(4),6-4 in the final. Ahlers had ousted top seed Bob Quall 4-6,7-6(2),6-4. Sarantos & Henry Leichtfried cruised to the doubles title with concluding wins over Farzanegan & Len Lindborg 6-1,6-1 and perennial winners Bob Duesler & Jim Nelson 6-3,6-3. Alex Swetka continued his strong play in the 90s with wins over Allie Ritzenberg 7-6(3),6-1 and then Tudor Apmadoc 7-6(5),5-7,6-1. Apmadoc had ousted Dick Zeller 6-2,7-5. Apmadoc & Ritzenberg won the doubles (a one-match event) with a narrow win over Bob Newman & Swetka 6-4,4-6,6-4.
King Van Nostrand demonstrated his world-class credentials with a series of overwhelming wins enroute to the 75 singles title. King lost no more than one game in any set while toppling George McCabe 6-0,ret(ill) and then surprise finalist Gordon Hammes 6-1,6-1. Hammes had defeated previously-unbeaten Neil Hurlbut 6-4,6-1. Dick Doss & John Powless triumphed again in the 75 doubles finishing up with wins over Joe Beeson & Hurlbut 6-3,6-2 and then McCabe & Chuck Nelson 6-4,6-4, McCabe & Nelson had bested Herb Browne & Courtney Henderson 6-3,6-3.
In the 80s, Tony Franco won both titles without the loss of a set. Franco topped doubles partner Bob Meyerdierks 6-4,6-2 in the semis and won the final is a walkover over unseeded Dick Emmert who had ousted three seeds including a monumental semi-final upset of Clem Hopp 0-6,7-6(8),7-6(4). Franco & Meyerdierks earned the title by besting Dick Eitel & Jacques Harlow 7-5,6-2 and then Len Bunge & Jim Mackey 7-5,6-4. Bunge & Mackey had ousted Gene Nolan & Bill Weathers 2-6,6-2,6-0.
Congratulations to Padg Bolton who edged top seed Brian Cheney 7-6,7-5 in the semis and then bested #2 Hugh Thomson 7-5-6-2 in the final to win the gold ball. Thomson had defeated Ash Mitha 6-3,6-1. The successful Bohannon brothers parted ways and younger Dan emerged with the doubles title. Apmadoc had squashed #2 Thomas Whitlow 6-2,6-1 while Moffett wiped out top seed Ed Osgood 6-0,6-0. The doubles was run as a four-team round robin but only one match was actually played: the team of Apmadoc & Robert Newman narrowly defeated Moffett & Otto Roemmich 6-4,4-6,7-6.
Christopher Bennett, seeded fourth, won a tight semi-final match over Geoff Cykman 3-6,6-2,7-6 and then easily handled top seed Phil Landauer 6-1,6-2 to capture the gold ball. Landauer had won his semi when doubles partner Tom Smith was forced to retire with an injury after winning the first set 4-6. Undaunted, Landauer & Smith nonetheless managed to win the doubles title finishing up with wins over Brent Abel & Chris Morgan 7-6,6-1 and then Timothy Butorac & Tom Rettenmaier 6-3,6-2. Butorac & Rettenmaier had edged Cykman & Skip Walther 4-6,6-2,7-6.
Youth (relatively speaking) prevailed in Houston as first year players Bob Quall (70s) and Neil Hurlbut (75s) won their respective national indoor singles titles (duplicating their wins at the January Cat II in Rancho Mirage). Quall won five matches without the loss of a set defeating Bob Duesler 6-1,7-6(6) in the semis and Rudy Hernando 6-3,6-4 in the final. Rudy had dominated 2008 three-time winner Fred Farzanegan 6-3,6-0 in their semi-final match. Hurlbut lost a set enroute (to Tom Springer in the quarters) before dispatching Russell Seymour 7-6(4),6-3 and Buddy Lomax 6-3,6-1. Lomax had narrowly defeated George McCabe 7-6(7),7-6(6).
Henry Leichtfried & George Sarantos, seeded second, prevailed in a deep 70 doubles draw. They defeated Don Biedinger & Hernando 6-4,6-3 in the semis and then Tom Brunkow & Sam Corso 6-4,7-5 in the final. Brunkow & Corso had upset perennial champs (and top seeds) Duesler & Jim Nelson 6-4,6-4. Top seeds Dick Doss & John Powless powered through the 75 doubles ending with wins over Hurlbut & Dennis Nielson 6-4,6-4 and then over current world champions McCabe & Jack Vredevelt 6-1,6-4. McCabe & Vredevelt had bested Don Neuman & Saul Snyder 6-4,6-3.
